Osmosis in Red Onion Cells

Osmosis in Red Onion Cells from Leslie S on Vimeo.

Watch the 20s video clip of osmosis occurring in red onion cells. Look familiar? What solutions were added to the wet mount? In what order?

  1. How did they put the solutions on the slide while it was being viewed on the microscope? I think the solutions added were salt water first and then distilled water

  10. Wow. That was a short video but it was really cool! It helped me get a better visualization of osmosis!

  15. I think that salt was added to the slide since the cell walls shrunk; then I think that water was added since the cell walls grew. It was so weird at the end, the cells were moving and then fading and then getting darker. Why?!

  18. This was so much clearer than the one we did in Lab. I'm glad we got to see this in class because I didn't really see much happen in Lab and was confused. Now I'm not!

  22. OOh! This is cool!
Do they have a video of osmosis that is even more close-up? I would be interested to see it :]
Thank you for posting this up! Our slide during the lab didn't work very well....

Are the white spots just parts of the onion that was damaged while the skin was peeled off?

  23. It was amazing when the cell membranes shrunk in size and when the cell membranes increased in size afterwards.

  24. Its just really weird how the cells are so tiny and its happening right as we speak. Or type.
