The Animators of Life

http://video.nytimes.com/video/2010/11/15/science/1248069334032/the-animators-of-life.html?src=dayp

Watch the video featured above from the NY Times about scientists who are creating animations about the complex inner machinery of living cells. Hopefully we will able to view some of these animations in our classrooms:)

  2. That was sooooo interesting! I hope we can see the animations in class... :)
I like the digital view of the molecules and cells, etc. Some of the parts reminded me of video games or something...

  3. Wow, it would be fun to be like Janet, animating molecules all day. It would be like playing video games, except that it would be for other people to study too!

  5. I'm very surprised that people have never used computer animation to create video representations of microscopic life. I also did a little bit of extra research and watched the video that they mentioned. It's called, "The Inner Life of the Cell" and you can watch it at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mszlckmc4Hw.
It's very cool and you can really see how much work was put into adapting the cell into an animation. I think that it would be a good idea to show that video in class, as it would be really helpful as a visualization.

  8. It must be very complicated to animate molecules. It must've taken a long time to learn... Anyhow, it's really interesting, and the information is accurate.

  9. It looks really cool, and it must be so awesome to actually be able to make those animations! I hope we can see more videos on the blog... they help a lot!

  10. Wow. That video was amazing! I literally couldn't take my eyes off the screen. I can't even imagine how the inside of a cell can be so complex. It's also kind of weird how science and animation are coming together, but i think that getting a better visualization on the inside of a cell would be great! I really enjoyed this video and i hope more like this one are posted!

  13. Wow! This is amazing! I agree with Mackenzie.... it must have been hard to learn this, let alone make the animations!

  14. that was fascinating. in my opinion, when they zoom in to see the specific parts, u get kinda lost about what organelle it is.

  15. That is really, really cool. The animations must have taken forever. It was also really helpful to learn all about this.

  23. Wow! These cell animations are amazing! They are really helpful in understanding cell activities, behavior, and the organelles. It's interesting how people like Janet actually went to Hollywood just to familiarize themselves with the software used for animation. While the rest of her group wanted to get into the entertainment industry, she used the software for science. I admire her work purpose and determination. I hope that scientists discover more about cells and organism behavior!
Thank you for posting this, Leslie!

  29. Wow this is amazing. I didn't think that the same technology used in video games and films is also used for understanding parts of the cell.
